Mapping Conflict and Compatibility of Landscape Values with Development Preferences

Terance Teh

An initiative supported by the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus’ MINDSET (Interdisciplinary Centre for Tropical Environmental Studies), the research project uses a crowd-mapping survey (also known as Public Participartory GIS(PPGIS)) to gather placed-based values: 1) landscape values (people’s valued places) and 2) development preferences. The research aims to support planning and design of sustainable cityscapes in the Klang Valley, to ensure the achievement of city development objectives without compromising liveability. This study will be one of the first spatially explicit location-based PPGI social research conducted on the Klang Valley (or Greater Kuala Lumpur). The spatial data from this study can assist in the identification of important places, especially ecologically significant spaces in the Klang Valley. The general aim of this study is to contribute to practical planning and decision-making with a basis of the public’s needs to improve urban environmental quality, which is a key aspect of liveability. The survey is established on the free crowd-sourcing website known as Zooniverse.
